Located just southeast of Madrid and southwest of Barcelona, you ll find Valencia. Famous for its reputation as a romantic city, Valencia s past is more romantic than its present, but isn t that the case with most cities? You ll have to look through the modern office buildings and apartment complexes of today, but you ll find the romance in the history and culture of this city.
Valencia has a couple of famous sons. These include Vincent Blasco Ibanez, who is best known for his novels The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and Blood and Sand. Both were Hollywood movies (filmed twice) and starred Rudolph Valentino. It doesn t get much more romantic than that does it? The other famous son is Joaquin Sorolla, a famous Spanish Impressionist, who has a museum dedicated to him in Madrid. These two individuals set the back drop for Valencia, as it is truly a city of arts and culture.
Vincent Blasco Ibanez wrote about it in Blood and Sand and you can experience it firsthand at the corridas or bullfights. Valencia s bullfights are held during the fallas, or festivals, held in the summers. The largest bullfighting ring in Spain is the Plaza de Toros and sits adjacent to the train station at Calle de Xativa 28.
If you re looking to get out of the heat, then head to Jardi Botanic. This botanical garden was founded in 1567 by the University of Valencia and boasts one of the most varied collections of trees and palms in all of Europe. For two centuries these botanical gardens were home to medicinal plants and many still take botany classes here to this day. There are nearly 45,000 international plant species on display and it s cheap to get in at just .60 euros or about 80 cents US.
As with all of Spain, you can t miss the cathedral. The Catedral de Valencia has claimed to be in possession of the Holy Grail for over 500 years. The chalice used in the Last Supper by Jesus is on display in a side chapel and has numerous legends associated with it. Joseph of Arimathea is believed to have used the chalice to collect Jesus blood as it dripped from his body on the cross. The cathedral itself was built in 1262 and features a number of architectural styles including Baroque, Romanesque and Gothic. Much of the cathedral has been restored including the arches and the domed basilica.
After visiting the cathedral itself, go to the Miguelete. This is a 154 foot Gothic tower that provides you with a panoramic view of all of Valencia. Next, head to the Museo de la Catedral.
The Museo de la Catedral features a variety of artwork from various eras. In the first hall, you ll find 14th and 15th century panel paintings and Gothic art, including authentic images of the Apostles Door. The second hall features art from the Renaissance as well as 15th and 16th century panel art. The third hall features Mannerist Art and panel paintings from the 16th century. The fourth hall features 18th century Academic Art by Vergara and Vincente Lopez as well as 14th to 20th century precious metal pieces. Finally, the fifth hall features large paintings by Maella and Goya.
After spending a day at a bullfight and experiencing the botanical garden and cathedral, you ll have a full understanding of Valencia s romantic and historic past.
