Son Bou is a desirable resort on the south coast of Menorca, the second largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands. Read some vital statistics about Son Bou holidays to find out how this destination stands out from the others and why it is so popular when it comes to choosing a holiday in Menorca.

Son Bou Climate

With an average of three hundred sunny days per year, Son Bou holidays are great for picking up a healthy looking tan. There is almost no rain at all here during the summer months, and temperatures reach a peak of 30°C – hot climes perfect for sunbathing. You can take pleasure in 11 hours of sunshine and fresh Mediterranean air. It can get breezy here occasionally, but is a pleasant cooling breeze that prevents sunbathers from getting uncomfortably hot.

In fact, you can expect good weather here throughout the year. Between May and October the temperature should remain above 20°C in Son Bou.

The Famous Beach at Son Bou

The shoreline at Son Bou is unique to Menorca. Along the rest of the southern coast, the beaches are enclosed in a series of small coves surrounded by rocky walls, but the Son Bou beach is on a completely different scale. It is the longest and biggest in Menorca, at two and a half miles in length, and an average of fifty metres wide. This means that, even during high season, the beach’s “occupation level” is just medium, with plenty of space for Son Bou holidaymakers to spread out along its length.

Because the geology of the area consists of chalky calcium rich rocks, a large proportion of the Son Bou sand is very fine and white in colour. The beach slopes gradually into the clear seawater with the sea bed remaining shallow and sandy for a long way out. This means that with the light on it from the right angle the sea appears turquoise.

Sea temperatures can reach as high as a balmy 25 ºC, making this shoreline perfect for the families that come for Son Bou holidays in the summer. The water sports are also excellent; there are established lifeguard stations along the beach and a first aid service.

There are four large hotels that serve the resort, but the best of the accommodation is found in the pockets of Son Bou villas set in the gentle green hillside. The villa resorts of Son Bou are called Torre Soli Nou and San Jaime with Santo Tomas a little further west. There is a wide selection of villas available at these resorts to suit all family sizes, most with private pools.

At the east end of the beach you will find a generous choice of restaurants that cater to all tastes, serving British fare, Indian food, Chinese, and a number of traditional Spanish meals. These are located in the heart of Son Bou (urbanitzacio) where you can also stock up at the supermarket and use services like the medical centre, chemist, car hire, and a host of designer outlets: everything you could want for a pleasurable Son Bou holiday.
