It’s not just the general public that needs travel insurance for when things go wrong on holiday. Did you know that Ewan McGregor once had to endure a strip search at Chicago airport just because he was in Trainspotting? Celebrities must also deal with the real world problems of illness, lost luggage, crime and accidents whilst abroad and will look to their holiday insurance to get them through.

Rugby hero Johnny Wilkinson fell foul of illness abroad in August 2005. He was there as part of a pre season tour of Japan, but he never made it onto the pitch. Instead, the only ball he got close to was the ball of pain in the lower right side of his abdomen as his appendicitis took hold.

For a whole week, Johnny found himself installed in the hospital, and hospitals can be expensive places to stay abroad. Had the rugby team not taken care of him, he would have needed some cheap travel insurance to cover the medical bills. It turned out that three weeks later his appendix ruptured and the injury cursed sportsman required surgery. Thankfully he was home by then.

TV belle, Holly Willoughby, was indeed ‘dancing on ice’ when she took a round the world holiday as a teenager. She was travelling with friends but it seems she went without the security of knowing her holiday insurance would get her home.

As the trip drew to a close, they chose the exotic destination of Hawaii as their final port of call. Holly and her pals found themselves staying in a hostel they didn’t trust, so made sure not to leave any of their possessions behind when they were out and about.

This seemed a prudent precaution until one fateful day at the beach. The group had put all their valuables in a black rucksack, but when they picked it up in the afternoon they found a cunning thief had exchanged it for one that looked similar but contained nothing but paper. Their belongings were gone.

In this situation, it is a comfort to know that the cheap travel insurance you have will cover the costs you may incur in completing your journey home; more than that, you know that the money and possessions you have lost will be replaced. Holly had lost her passport, her ticket home and her money. The local police were able to put the teenagers in touch with a charity that helped them repatriate, something that travel insurance will cover. Holly also lost four month’s worth of her travel snaps; sadly no holiday insurance can replace these.

The beach also proved hazardous for Julie Walters in Corfu. She was on holiday with a friend exploring the coast for a nice place to sunbathe and spied a high rocky outcrop that would make a good tanning platform. Reaching it meant wading through a waist high depth of water so they gathered up their things into towels and carried them above their heads. To Julie’s dismay, the sea turned frighteningly turbulent midway across and they had to be rescued from the waves. Thankfully they weren’t hurt, but their possessions were lost in the water; that didn’t bother Julie because the holiday insurance would compensate for the loss. She knew that her wellbeing was more important.

Anthony Head also feared for his life when he visited Haiti. As a star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer you would expect him to endure a bite or two from the creatures of the night, but when a spider bit him he was hospitalised because the wound became infected. Again, travel insurance becomes essential in these circumstances. But his troubles abroad did not end there. Tony’s documentary crew were kidnapped and held to ransom, which must be a terrifying experience. What you might not know is that the best cheap travel insurance policies include some cover for this risk as part of their Acts of Terrorism Cover. This fact may offer little comfort for the victims, but it will at least provide some compensation, which is what holiday insurance is all about.
