Avila
Avila rises up from the shadow of the Gredos Sierra Mountains and is one of Spain’s most scenic cities. It was a textile power during the Renaissance era and the birthplace of Santa Teresa de Jesus, for this reason Avila has many religious and spiritual buildings relating to the life of the mystic. This region has some of most scenic campsites in Spain, where towering mountains mingle with clear freshwater lakes. There are plenty of nature reserves in the local area worth exploring and kayaking and horse riding excursions are easy to arrange.
Toledo
Toledo is known as the city of three cultures as the Christians, Arabs and Jews lived here together for centuries. The monuments are testimony to this rich mix of cultures, where tall gothic churches stand alongside peeling synagogues. The whole city is a giant museum and camping here can be equally enthralling. Toledo is situated near the capital of Madrid, which is definitely a must visit whilst on your camping holiday in Spain.
Tarragona
Tarragona is situated on the shores of the Mediterranean and is definitely the warmest UNESCO city in Spain. It was known during the Roman times as Tarraco, and here important monuments nestle alongside beautiful beaches. There are countless excursions that you can do whilst on your camping holiday in Spain, and one of the most popular is the nearby Cistacerian monasteries, which are amongst the best preserved in the world. The monastery at Poblet is also a popular destination with holidaymakers; although it is not nearly as grand. If you’re after a more relaxing holiday then the beautiful beaches of the area are perfect for sunbathing. Water sports are popular here and the more adventurous campers can try their hands at wind surfing, or jet skiing, before tucking into some of Tarragona’s famous and deliciously succulent seafood.
